I have just had the opportunity to e-interview Ernie Malik, Dawn Treader’s chief publicist:
Cy: How closely related are the Dawn Treader movie and the Dawn Treader book?
Ernie: The film is based on the book, and the adaptation is faithful to the source material.
Cy: Could you confirm whether WETA workshop is involved with the Dawn Treader?
Ernie: WETA is not involved.
Cy: The Lady of the Green Kirtle (the witch from the Silver Chair) won’t be in this film, will she?
Ernie: She will not.
Cy: What is the unfathomable fate that‘s been rumored of lately?
Ernie: A plot point is all I can say.
Cy: Will the Dawn Treader be filming at all in New Zealand?
Ernie: Location shots of White Island off the Bay of Plenty (without cast).
Cy: What will be the main focus of Dawn Treader?
Ernie: The structure of the book’s story remains in place in the film.
Cy: Would you know, by any chance, who’s been cast as Ramandu?
Ernie: I know, but can’t say anything beyond that.
Cy: How much violence/battles will be shown in Dawn Treader?
Ernie: Let’s say the story’s adventures include the slave traders…sea serpent…the dragon…the storm…the Dufflepuds.
Cy: Who is this [Here was placed a picture of the "Mysterious Little Girl"], and what role does she play in the Dawn Treader?
Ernie: We will not confirm anything at this time.
omg!!!!! i can’t wait to see the movie!!!!!
wow. talk about being cryptic!
very brief answers to say the least. Even his answers to the LOTGK and Ramandu questions are kind of vague and leave a fair bit of room for interpretation. (i.e. “She will not…. be in the movie herself, but she may be heavily hinted at and referenced as an off-screen villain” or “i know… that we have completely axed Ramandu from the story”)
Cryptic is right. Yet there are some definite yes/no answers. No to the Lady of the Green Kirtle. No to the cast in New Zealand. No to Weta. And, disagreeing with icarus, yes to Ramandu. We just don’t know who he is. We also don’t know the plot. To be fair to Ernie Malik, there’s no real reason to know at this point, is there? We just have to wait for the movie next December.
Cy: how is it you get all the interesting stories? And your posts get comments? Mine get none.
i really hope they keep when Aslan turns into a lamb, that is my favorite part.
wow! sounds awesome! can’t wait for VotDT!
We need to remember this was an interview by e-mail, so it’s not too surprising the answers are so short.
This is labeled “Part 1.” How long was the interview, and when do you think more parts will be published? Thanks.
@Mark Sommer: The next part of the interview will be posted once Mr. Malik replies to the second set of questions. The next bit will be about as long as this one I’ve already posted. I can’t really guarantee any date to which it will be posted
Wow…nothing like being vague….oh well…hurry up 12-10-10…LONG LIVE ASLAN !!!…371
aww man, dont ask directly if LOTGK will be featured in VODT, of course they’ll say no, or give dead end answers. ask them if *anything* about Silver Chair will be referenced such as plot and/or characters. they have to answer this more accurately because Ben Barnes was already quoted as saying they borrowed a few ideas from the other books.
dude, try to be a bit more “clever” with the questions next time. no i dont mean your questions were dumb, but goodness knows they were so obvious. there is more than one way to skin a cat. you know they will never be forthcoming with anything plot or spoiler related, which includes characters and references to future movies. use various interviews and info already out there to fashion your questions. you know that Ben Barnes was already quoted as saying that they borrowed ideas from some of the other books. try to cleverly post a follow up question to that: are they storylines that involve characters that have already appeared (Eustace, Caspian, Edmund?) or not? (Jill, Digory and Polly, Tirian?) would they ever feature anything about the Calormenes? (this will indicate if they got any ideas from Last Battle/ Horse and his Boy). try to touch lightly on any other evil presence appearing in VODT, will we see the White Witch again or are there any future bad guys that would make their presence felt? (this will now nudge them to say anything about LOTGK or Tash).
I knew Mr. Malik would keep the answers vague, but not that short. Yikes.
Now, it’s been a long time since I’ve read the book, but when was The Lady of the Green Kirtle ever involved in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader? That’s what confuses me.
I usually re-read the books at least a month or one week before its movie version comes out, so I know I won’t be reading the book anytime soon. (At least I don’t think. The way this is going is too curious and I want to know what I can’t remember, lol.)
Wow! What an interview. It’s almost like an interview with a policeman who can’t give away anything about a murder case or something. (yes, I’m creative) I can’t wait to see this movie!!!!!
May your swords stay sharp!
Oh good. This is what I wanted to hear…despite its vagueness. It’s staying faithful to the book!!! WOO!
