Ever heard of Dr. Devin Brown? He wrote two well-known books on the Chronicles of Narnia series: Inside Narnia: A Guide to Exploring The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) and Inside Prince Caspian (2008). Dr. Brown is working a third volume in the series, Inside The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which will be published in September. And he teaches a class on C. S. Lewis.
Well, Dr. Brown and colleague Greg Bandy, professors at Asbury College (Wilmore, Kentucky), went to the Narnia Summit last week where they previewed Dawn Treader footage. Here are their impressions:
Dr. Brown remarked, “The entire weekend was terrific. Doing anything with Micheal Flaherty is always great—he is one of the most charismatic, most brilliant, and most generous people I have ever worked with. Having the chance to interact with the faith leaders who attended the summit was also a real highlight. Douglas Gresham was inspiring. After hearing Micheal Apted and Mark Johnson speak and after seeing the early footage, I am very confident that Lewis’s great story is in great hands.”
Prof. Bandy added, “I initially had some concerns about how they were going to create an engaging cinematic climax for this particular Narnia story, but the writer and film makers have handled it beautifully. I’m extremely excited about what I saw.
“Fox and Walden have two master storytellers at the helm in Michael Apted and Mark Johnson. They are certainly making the investment in the required special effects for a magical epic of this nature, but more importantly they’ve crafted a beautiful story that appeals to so many ages, just like the books!”
