Yesterday The Grand Rapids Press published more details of Paul Martin’s proposal to his fiance Courtney Addicott on board the Dawn Treader last September. Martin, a native of Belmont, Michigan, and webmaster of NarniaFans.com,
contacted Douglas Gresham, Lewis’ stepson and producer of the films, who arranged their visit via publicist Ernie Malik.
“It was on the call sheet,” Addicott said. “Everyone knew but me.”
So what did the proposal look like?
In front of the beautifully constructed helm of the Dawn Treader, Martin got down on one knee, pulled out a diamond ring and proposed. Her answer? Yes. Of course.
“I didn’t think I said it that loud, but the guys on the set said I yelled it,” Addicott, 22, said with a grin, sitting next to Martin, 29, in a coffee shop booth.
“We were interviewed on camera — I don’t know if it was for a DVD or what,” Martin said. “Neither of us was coherent. It was nothing but emotion at that point.”
. . . .
With the ring fresh on her finger, they were invited to join the cast and crew for lunch. They walked into the dining area with their plates of food and were met with applause, and a standing ovation led by actor Skandar Keynes, who plays Edmund Pevensie in the film series. Star Ben Barnes, who plays Prince Caspian (crowned King Caspian in “Dawn Treader,” the third movie in the franchise), congratulated them personally.
For the next three days, the newly engaged couple experienced a “Narnia” fan’s dream. They met all the principals, saw actors turn into creatures in the makeup trailer and watched director Michael Apted (who most notably helmed the “7 Up” documentary series and James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough”) work.
“Apted, this esteemed and serious guy, came up to me and said, ‘We were all hoping she’d say yes,’” Martin said with a laugh. “It was an experience we’ll never forget.”
