New reports indicate that Dawn Treader still has a possibility to be released in Dawn Treader, despite what I reported in my interview with Ernie Malik, in which he stated that “the film was not shot in 3-D format.” However, rumors have been circulating re-opening the possibility, raising both eyebrows and expectations. According to NarniaFans.com, the conversion from Dawn Treader‘s 2-D to 3-D format
is very costly and very controversial at the moment, considering that 3-D is the hottest thing going in theaters at the moment. First this, from Deadline Hollywood: “Hard conversion conversations are being had now at studios on films that include Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Gulliver’s Travels and The Hobbit. Executives are weighing competitive issues and the potential benefits of higher ticket prices against the $100,000 per running time minute that is being used as a rule-of-thumb conversion cost.”
Personally, I think it could sway both ways, 2-D as the first two Narnia films and 3-D as the latest thing. However, 3-D has seen big money (Avatar had the highest gross of all time, mostly from 3-D showings) and could be a good choice for the filmmakers.
UPDATE: According to NarniaFans.com and ComingSoon.net, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader will be released in both 2-D and 3-D formats this December. So you can choose which one to see or watch both! Paul Martin also gives tips on watching a film in 3-D.
NOOOOOO! 3D is a waste!! It’s a distracts from the story. It’s downright un-Narnian to release a Narnian film in 3D!!!! Ok, I admit it, it’s cool. But it’s way overrated. 3D isn’t the ticket to smash hit. It takes a good movie. And you’re better off with a good reputation. In the case of Avatar, it wouldn’t matter HOW the movie was released, people would see anyway because of James Cameron’s reputation. When Disney’s Bolt released however (In 3D, mind you) it didn’t do so well. (continued below)
Why? Because Disney doesn’t have a good reputation. Fox is spending a ton of money on something they’ll get very little out of. Don’t waste your time, Fox!!!
…it sounds kinda cool, and the idea of seeing the Dawn Treader movie in 3D has REALLY grown on me.
