Gresham confirms: Walden’s contract expired

In a recent interview with Middle-earth Radio, Douglas Gresham (pictured with AslansCountry.com admin Matthew), co-producer of the Narnia films, confirms that Walden no longer owns the rights to produce another Narnia film.

If you’re aware that Walden’s contract with the [C.S. Lewis Estate] has expired, that’s true. And that leaves us in a situation for a variety of different reasons. We can’t immediately produce another Narnian chronicle movie. But it is my hope that the Lord will spare me and keep me fit and healthy enough so that in three or four years time we can start production on the next one. We will, I hope, be able to start production and find another budget.

So what will we be seeing in three or four years? Gresham sums it up well: “We’ll have to wait and see. It’s in the Lord’s hands.”

The Magician’s Nephew better be next!

  2. Peter

I don’t care whether it’s Walden or a different company–I just need my Narnia!!! Magician’s Nephew needs to be made NOW!!!  :D

  3. Kathy

It makes sense to do The Silver Chair next because it is next chronologically.   Should be made while the actors are still young.

  4. Lilliandil

It’s too bad that the contract expired, but it’s great that Douglas Gresham is trusting God. I’m praying for him and hoping the next movie will be made soon! :)
I also think the Silver Chair should be made next, not the Magician’s Nephew. They already introduced Jill Pole in the Dawn Treader and established Eustace’s character.

Yes I thought that was the best answer I could have heard! Yes I would like to hear exactly when Narnia will be out and what movie they’re doing, but that is what I want to hear most!

My vote is for Silver Chair. If possible why not do both S.C., and the Magician’s nephew?

  6. Peter

I also thought they should do Silver Chair next, due to the age thing, but Magician’s Nephew is my favorite and I’m just so excited!!!

anything:just MAKE another one STAT 0:D

I would prefer SC because they already introduced Jill pole, they have to finish the Caspian connection and also do in the order of the books..the audience will easily recognize Eustace as he’s already been in the movies..it makes perfect sense to do SC next. .And as its are gonna take more than 3 or 4 years for the next movie and if they do MN then, the actors would be too old to play their parts in SC after that.
But anyway, I just want to see the series go on..
And Gresham got it right :) It’s in the lord’s hands :)
Narnians, just take it to the lord in prayer :)

    • Always Narnian

Yeah, Silver Chair is logical, that’s what I would really like to see next- that, or a reboot. Silver Chair is the only thing that makes sense, since they DID introdue Jill Pole in VODT. (Exactly what I thought!) O, and giving the impression that Eustace was coming back to Narnia.

  9. Always Narnian

I would like a reboot, but I don’t know about another company. I mean, I don’t really like how Walden/Disney/Fox have done the series (except LWW) but I wonder if other companies would keep it clean enough and at the kid/family movie level? :-?

I’ve liked what Walden has done with Narnia. But if it comes down to having to chose between no Walden or no Narnia, I’m choseing no Walden!

No way! Have you ever seen the BBC productions? It would be better no Narnia than suffering through more low quality, cruddy acting and all around crap that the BBC put out.

  12. Fireflower

Yup! Narnia is in God’s hands! I really hope that they will do anther movie though!

  13. Chris

I think Last Battle shoud be next due to uncertainity of budget capacity in producing movies for all books and I want to see Aslan’s country!

They definitely need to give Walden another contract. They have by far done the best job with the Narnia films. As for the next movie that should be made, I had assumed that it would be the Silver Chair because they have already introduced the main character, but I do love The Magician’s Nephew too. I really don’t care which film they do next, just don’t make me wait four years just to hear that production has started!

  15. What I really don’t undertstand is that, if the rights to the Narnia films expired, then how was Perry Moore able to secure the funding for the next movie? Why go through the effort if the clock is about to run out? Also, if Walden’s contract ended, or was on the verge of ending, then why did Michael Flaherty say that negotiations were in progress in regards to the next movie? Or was the contract on the verge of ending anyway, but executives at Walden aiming towards renewing it based on whether or not the project was officially green lit? It’s kind of a weird situation.

The Silver Chair should be next since it is the fourth book in the series. It’s best to do that while the kids are still young because if they wait any longer they’ll be too old and that could hurt the series.

  18. Matt Newham

I would rather see The Silver Chair made next – the only actor to have changed so far has been the voice of Reepicheep, and I think that Eustace was well played in Dawn Treader. Put The Magician’s Nephew on hold – whether they make The Horse and His Boy or The Magician’s Nephew first is more academic than whether they should begin with Silver Chair.

  19. The Eighth Friend of Narnia

Fan wise (to all Magician people-this is me and my friends and other survey I’ve seen.) They should renew with Walden and do The Silver Chair.  The only problem with that is then they would have to hurry up and do The Last Battle while Jill was still young, which is the exact same dillema that they are having with Eustace!   The Last Battle problem is also that because it is such an overtly Christian film, not a lot of revenue will come in,  I shouldn’t wonder, and so they will be at a financial loss.  If they’re at a financial loss they won’t be able to fund anther movie (Magician’s Nephew).

Financially:  Lewis’ estate would probally financially want to go the Magician’s Nephew route.  Just because it’s a fairly safe option [about as much risk as any movie is  ;-) ]  money wise.

I agree that SC should be next followed by The Last Battle and then The Magicians Nephew. I really Hpoe that they dont leave out The Horse and his boy as it is my favorite Narnia book.

Why does SC have to be next? As long as it’s made while the actors are the appropriate age, it will still work. If you think about it, almost all the charecters are older in the movies than the books, so why does it matter what age they are, just as long as they still don’t look like they’ve reached sixteen? Personally, I think it’s a good thing Magician’s Nephew will be made next, if at all, for this simple reason: it’s been proven that box office gross and the series book sales are linked, therefore, Silver Chair would gross very little, because the book sells the least of all, whereas MN is second only to LWW in sales. Therefore, making MN makes more sense, because if they make enough money, they can make MORE movies. If you look at the big picture, it does make more sense. This way we get more than just Silver Chair. I’d honestly wouldn’t mind if the charecters were a little older if it means we can get more movies in the first place. I want the whole series, and quite frankly, I wouldn’t mind if they skipped over SC to begin with. I like the book, but if sacrificing it gets us TLB sooner, then I’m fine with that. All it takes are some minor story alterations, like they did with VDT and it would hopefully work. In short, I do not see the neccessity of making SC right away.

  22. Robert

Why is it so difficult to negotiate a new contract?

Or is it that Lewis’ estate is just being greedy and obnoxious leeches in trying to suck dry the pockets of anybody trying to bring The Chronicles of Narnia to the silver screen?

  23. WillowofNarnia

I think they should continue with SC!!!

  24. Ryan Tripolino

I think they should make the Silver Char next. I hope they will continue with Narnia series. Because I loved the Narnia books and the movies.

  25. Liberty16

I just want to see another Narnia movie :)

why is it that they start on a series of books knowing full well if they make the first one they are comitted to doing them all because of the major interest and following, yet they then start failing there customers by stopping half way through. this has happened so many times in many tv sci fi series. dont they know that by doing this that people will never trust them again and lose interest in any new ideas that particular organisation come up with in the future, due to not wanting to get into a storyline for fear of having it axed half way through.
what they should have done with the likes of narnia is set a budget from the beginning that encompasses all the books in the series and set the contract expiries accordingly.
I guess they will always have profit the foremost in their minds instead of creating a masterpiece that will go on through the ages like films like snow white and wizard of ozz.
I guess if carrol had thought the way these mougals think now, narnia would have been a single book, he fortunately was not of the greedy nature like todays film makers.
IF YOU ARE GOING TO ATTEMPT SOMETHING OF NARNIA`S LEVEL THEN SEE IT THROUGH OR NEVER START IT IN THE FIRST PLACE AND LEAVE IT TO SOMEONE WHO HAS A MARK OF RESPECT FOR THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR AND NOT PURELY TO FILL HIS OR HER POCKETS.
Sadly this will be the demise of the film industry unless they get their act together and genuinly want to be known and proud for producing a masterpiece that is a tribute to the original author.
